The World from a Jewish Perspective XVI
by Barry Cohen

Thank you Edith,

America is at war. Slowly, even the most peace loving person is awakened from the dream that one can live in peace in spite of a bad neighbor. The nice idea, that being good, will be acknowledged and reciprocated, came to a sudden death. The deadly attack by inhumane people on humanity brought us back to the law of the jungle. Or, you eat me, or I eat you. It is that simple.

We, Americans wanted always to be loved and felt privileged to be able to help the needy of the world. Today we have to make the decision what is more important to us - to be loved or to be feared? This is a dreadful choice. But according to the law of "survival of the fittest," we have to decide to survive.

America shows its teeth and power. This is great. America sends bombs to the bad guys and food for the innocent population, this is great too. It goes in tandem with the American spirit of morals and decency. It serves also to keep the flimsy coalition together but over the long run, is useless. It is not a give and take proposition but a "give and give" deal. The hungry people will open their mouth to be fed, but not to speak up against their fanatical leaders. They will do this only, if they are hungry and scared. I know, this sounds barbarous, but this is war. After World War II, the U.S. offered the Marshal plan. But during the war, there was Dresden Hiroshima and others. Without these actions, America would have lost the war and could not even expect mercy or assistance by the murderous Nazis. After the war, we will be able to assist the hungry again, but only if we have won. And we have to win.

Good intentions are great. But Bin Laden and cohorts have good intentions too. At least, this is what they believe. Therefore, we will never be able to convince them with other means than power. And our power, not of the great Satan - as they call America or the small Satan Israel, can do it. Only the pressure of their own people can stop the terror. Nazism could turn in short time a docile population into dangerous fanatics - as extreme Islam does today. The Nazi population was forced under high pressure to beg for peace, as America will have to do the same, now.

Idealism is beautiful, but can not live without realism. To play "make-belief," is a nice game for children, but deadly for adults. While Israel was fighting for its life, the world played this game and satisfied itself by offering Israel hypocritical advice. The United Nations knew to vote for two independent states, but where were they, or the rest of the world, when 6 Arab armies invaded on May the 15th 1948 and attacked Israel? Israel lived and lives in constant terror and fear. Where was the world? Nonchalantly the world accepted or even agreed to terror as long as it hit only Israel. But of course, now it is a complete different story. The world accepted and by this encouraged terrorism, who graduated now into full bloom. We saw already once before the sacramonious speeches of a crazy man and the excited followers hailing him. Only then they screamed "Heil Hitler."

The reliance on the so-called "coalition," may be a necessary step today. We received this week a good example of one of these "moderate states," as Prince of Saudi Arabia, Alwaleed Bin Talal gave the City of New York a gift of 10 million Dollars. He just wanted America the push the Israelis to stop "slaughtering" the Palestinians.

The Mayor of New York, Rudy Giuliani returned the check. By returning the money he did not show only his virtue but also his realism. We salute him. Eventually, America and the decent part of the world will come to know the real friends of freedom. And freedom is worth to fight for, otherwise there is nothing left to fight for. And so we have to fight, for freedom and also for our lives. We will succeed with the only reliable grand-coalition - with God and ourselves.
